Tell us about your first day at something — school, work, as a parent, etc.

My First Day at School

Stepping into the vast, unfamiliar world of school was nothing short of a melodramatic adventure. The moment I entered the school gates, a sense of unease began to bubble inside me. Raised alongside my brothers, I had developed a knack for climbing and jumping over fences—a skill that, on that day, I intended to put to good use.

My heart pounded as I watched other children play, oblivious to my growing dread. The realization hit me hard: I wanted to go home. Determined, I glanced at the tall, wrought-iron gate. It didn’t seem so intimidating after all. With a quick glance around, I made my move, scaling the gate with the agility of a seasoned escape artist. Just as I was halfway through my daring attempt, the school caretaker spotted me. Panic set in, and tears welled up in my eyes as she gently pulled me down, assuring me that everything would be alright. That day, I learned that sometimes, bravery is about facing what scares you the most, even if that means staying in school.

My First Day at the Hostel

The day I left for the hostel was filled with bittersweet emotions. My entire extended family, uncountable relatives, had gathered to bid me farewell. It was a scene straight out of a dramatic Bollywood movie—sobbing relatives lined up as if I were leaving forever, even though I was only a few hours away.

As I arrived at the hostel, the reality of my new surroundings hit me like a wave. Every corner of the hostel was bustling with activity. Girls were crying on their phones, missing their families with heart-wrenching sobs. I watched them with wide eyes, puzzled. Why were they so emotional? Weren’t they old enough to handle being away from home? It was a day of unexpected surprises and a profound realization that everyone has their own way of coping with change.

My First Day as a Parent

The day my daughter was born was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. Instead, I found myself in the ICU, separated from her and my family. My daughter was surrounded by family members, everyone eager to welcome her into the world. But I was alone, waiting for my release to see her and hold her for the first time.

The hours felt like an eternity as I lay there, hearing about her through hushed whispers and occasional updates. The pain of not being able to see my newborn daughter was overwhelming. My heart ached, longing to be by her side, to hold her, to feel her tiny hands. But no one came to see me. It was a lonely and emotional beginning to my journey as a parent, but it made the moment I finally held her all the more precious.

Life’s firsts are often filled with a mix of emotions—fear, excitement, loneliness, and joy. Each of these moments, as dramatic as they were, shaped me into who I am today. What about you? Do you have any poignant first experiences that left a mark on your heart?
